Some Quick Game Notes

I’m tired so here’s some quick hits…

• Dillon Gee’s performance tonight snapped a streak of 36 games in which Mets’ starter’s gave up two or more runs.  Out of all of the stats I’ve seen recently, this one illustrates the point I have been making about how average the rotation is collectively this year.
• Ron Darling’s annoyance at how much the Padres’ bullpen slowed the game down was amusing.

“These relief pitcher’s have put a parachute on this game.  Thatcher has faked to second four times this inning…”-Ron Darling

• Even though he had only one hit, David Wright had a huge impact on this game.  His three run blast is obvious, but I really enjoyed his fake throw to first to fool Maybin for an out in the bottom of the frame.  Don’t forget, this happened after his diving stop prevented Maybin from scoring in the first place.
• Chalk up two more runs allowed by Igarashi.  Seems like a nice dude, but I can’t say I’ll be too upset the day we see him leave the franchise permanently.  He is a run allowing machine.
• Jason Bay is Baying again (0 for his last 20)…
• No matter what the situation, a road series win is always a good thing.  Particularly at a park that the Mets have struggled in historically.

I’ll Let Gary, Keith, and Ron Do The Talking

Chalk up another loss that you can attribute to the Mets bullpen.  The bright side is the boys at SNY were able to bring a smile to my face in the middle of yet another Bobby Parnell meltdown.

Gary Cohen used the word beleaguered to describe the bullpen which opened the door for Keith and Ron.

There is Ronny’s straight forward,

The entire bullpen has struggled.

Keith started off with a cliche.

Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Then came the Pièce de résistance.  Mex at his finest.

Can’t put your thumb in the dike and stop the bleeding.

This is exactly why I shelled out an extra twenty bucks for the MLB.TV premium package.  There is no way the lame ass Colorado Rockies broadcast team can match this exchange.

For those of you that have never had to listen to out of market announcers, appreciate what you have.

Am I frustrated right now?  Absolutely.  Is it still early? Absolutely.  The only thing I can take from this game is that it was probably Bobby’s last game as the set up man for a while.

Mets 6, Giants 4

These Mets have a lot of fight in them, don’t they?

Ronny, I have to agree with you.

The Mets seemed to control most of the game tonight.  Mike Pelfrey  had a strong outing as he pitched into the eighth inning.

Pelfrey was extremely economical on the hill.  When he left the game, he had only thrown 85 pitches.

I wonder if he’ll be able to come in for a save tomorrow?

Fernando Nieve came in to get two crucial outs to keep the Mets up by one run.

I was feeling good at that point.

All of a sudden, Francisco Rodriguez gave up a game tying home run to pinch hitter, John Bowker.

Normally I go into “Oh no, not again” mode at this point.  It didn’t happen tonight.

I am starting to believe that this team has a shot in every game they play.

Even after the deflating home run, Ike Davis made a circus catch to the end the inning on a Pablo Sandoval pop up.

I believed that Francoeur, Davis, and Barajas could plate one run to seal the game.

I believed, and it actually happened.  Rod Barajas did not disappoint with his walk off home run.

At this point, Barajas can do no wrong.

The only reason why he had the chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, was because Rodriguez shook him off and insisted on throwing a changeup to Bowker.

Maybe Rodriguez will listen next time.

The Lumber:

Chalk this one up for the “new” Mets as far as the sticks were concerned.  Ike Davis and Rod Barajas hit two home runs apiece to lead the way.

So much for Citi Field being a pitcher’s park.

Jose Reyes went two for four.

David Wright extended his hitting streak to ten games with an infield single.

Even Jason Bay made a little noise with an RBI double.

Outlook:

The Mets hope to continue their winning ways at Citi Field with Johan Santana on the mound on Saturday.  He will be facing Todd Wellemeyer.

Hopefully, Johan will bounce back like Pelfrey did tonight.
